END POLIO: Bangor Rotary Club are planning their second local ‘Light up the Menai Strait Purple’ project to raise awareness of how close the Rotary International campaign, which is supported so generously by Bill and Melinda Gates, is to eradicating Polio from the world. There are only two countries where the disease is endemic – Afghanistan and Pakistan. Each week dedicated Rotary teams are in these areas carrying out immunisations, sometimes in very dangerous circumstances. Amazingly just £1 will immunise 5 children with this life saving serum! This year during ‘End Polio Now’ week, October 23-25, the Strait area will be illuminated once more. The week will begin with a multi-faith service in Bangor Cathedral on Sunday October 20 which will be open to everyone. Caernarfon and Beaumaris castles will glow purple (thanks to Cadw) as will the Anglesey Arms, Gazelle, Victoria and Bulkeley hotels, and the cathedral and Pontio building - plus many more supportive businesses and private houses. Bangor Rotary Club would love to hear from schools, businesses and anyone that would like to join in this incredible visual event and also help rid the world of this disease!
