Caernarfon get Dolgellau bonus win

-

CAERNARFON gained a much-needed bonus point victory over Dolgellau as they clinched a 37-10 win.

A devastating opening quarter from the hosts aided by some suspect defending from the visitors saw Caernarfon run in three unanswered tries to take an unassailable lead so early in the match.

Caernarfon prop, Pedr Jones scored the first, only a minute into the match, crossing under the posts. Aled Jones converted. Four minutes later a strong run from full-back, Jones, saw centre Iwan Evans go over in the left corner to make it 12-0.

Seventeen minutes into the match their third try came as wing, Adam Thomas’ long and winding run saw him cross near the posts.

Aled Jones converted and Caernarfon held a formidable 19-0 lead.

Dolgellau made a decent fist of it for the remaining hour of the match, but Caernarfon were well on top in the first half, with Aled Jones adding two penalties to make it 25-0 at the interval.

Playing with the slope, it took Dolgellau 25 minutes to get on to the score board.

Number eight Dewi Thomas’ quick tap penalty saw flanker, Tim Jones and full-back, James Owen exchange neat passes and Jones went over for the score and made it 25-5.

But the hosts responded strongly as number eight Mac Jones crossed after half an hour, and prop Pedr Jones got his second try of the match five minutes later.

Full-back, Aled Jones converting the latter to make it 37-5.

Dolgellau finished strongly, and from another quickly taken penalty, again from outstanding number eight Thomas, wing Rob Pugh wormed his way over for a consolation score five minutes into added time.

The win, which was the home side’s first of the 2019-20 campaign, means that Caernarfon are seventh in Division One North with Dolgellau just a place below them.

The performance and result was a vast improvement on their most recent games against Ruthin (15-32), Pwllheli (5-12) and Llangefni (12-28) and they will be looking to build some momentum on the back on this victory.

Next up for Caernarfon in the league is a home clash against Nant Conwy on Saturday, October 19, kick-off at 2.30pm.

The following week, on Saturday, October 26, they travel to Bethesda, kick-off is also at 2.30pm.
