Victory for Ysgol Gwaun Gynfi

- Football

FIVE local schools defied bitter conditions recently to take part in a football tournament organised by a group of Coleg Menai sport students.

Pupils from Ysgol Cae Top, Ysgol Glanadda, Ysgol Maesincla, Ysgol Bethel and Ysgol Gwaun Gynfi donned their extra layers as the temperature dropped and the winds picked up at BangorUniversity’s Treborth site, each one bravely representing their school in a series of 5-a-side matches.

The overall winners of the tournament were a very proud, if a little cold,

Ysgol Gwaun Gynfi, who will go on to represent Arfon at the Wales Schools final.

As part of a module on organising a sporting event, the group of Level 3 Development, Coaching and Fitness students were required to liaise with Bangor University to book the 3G pitch; speak to all the local primary schools, outlining their plans, and send out correspondence containing details of the event and how to take part. They also had to referee matches and assist on the day.

Sport programme leader Jenny Davies said: “The planning and execution of these kinds of events gives students excellent experience, helping them to develop key skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem solving and communication.

“I personally think it also helps them to appreciate how much work and effort goes into organising an event like this, and gives them a taste of coaching youngsters in sport.

“Despite the weather, the day was a huge success and everybody thoroughly enjoyed the competition.

“We look forward to organising more events like these in the future.”
