Butterworth seals win for Pwllheli

- Rugby union

PWLLHELI recovered from 14-8 down with 15 minutes to play at Llangefni thanks to two high class tries from Nick Butterworth, on permit from RGC.

Pwll took the lead with a three-pointer by Alan Roberts.

Just before the break Cefni were penalised near half way. Pwll set up a maul from the 10 metre line out, and a few phases later, John Pugh took a short pass on the blind side to squeeze over in the corner to make it 8-0 at half-time.

A long Sior Grieves kick into the Pwll 22 saw their 15 being caught 10 metres out, allowing Cefni to set up camp in the red zone.

After the pack had pulled in the defence with their strong carries, the ball was moved into midfield, where Greg Horsman came on a trademark cutback run, which saw him slice through to the posts.

Rhys Hughes made it 8-7 with the boot.

Aaron Jeffries crossed the gain line, Mathew Thomas was stopped on the line, and finally Dion Oliver got the try.

Hughes’ superbly struck conversion made it 14-8 to the hosts.

A penalty took Pwll to within 10 metres. Their line out drive was strong and led to a yellow card for a Cefni forward. Pwll decided to scrummage against a seven-man pack.

No wonder Pwll got the nudge on, and no surprise that Butterworth,

with recent Welsh Premiership experience, found a way to the line with a full stretch dive in.

Alan Roberts’ extras put Pwll back in the lead at 15-14.

Butterworth sealed victory by setting off on a 40 metre diagonal run to the corner for an excellent individual try to make the final score 20-14.
