Williams goal seals shock win for Blaenau

- Football

BLAENAU Ffestiniog Amateurs achieved one of the results of the season after Meilir Williams’ 49th minute goal secured them a 1-0 victory at Llandudno Albion in Division One.

The result significantly damages the hosts’ hopes of winning the Welsh Alliance Division One title as they lost further ground at the summit in difficult conditions at Maesdu Park.

An extremely strong wind caused problems for both sides throughout the contest, with the home side spurning a host of opportunities early on that would come back to haunt them early in the second period.

After the break saw Albion have a big shout for a penalty waved away from their opening attack, and things got even worse for the hosts soon after when they fell behind on 48 minutes.

The Quarrymen gained a crucial advantage thanks to prolific forward Meilir Williams, who took advantage of some space and delivered a fine attempt past Liam Jones to break the deadlock.

The home side threw everything at their opponents in the closing stages in pursuit of a leveller, but they were unable to take advantage of any opportunities that came their way.

Jones’ men have now lost six times in 20 league contests this term, leaving them to focus firmly on Saturday’s landmark cup tie against a formidable Holyhead outfit.

In Division Two, Pwllheli and Llannefydd shared a goalless draw.

Waunfawr booked their place in the Bob Owen Memorial Shield third round thanks to a 4-1 home win over Llangoed.

The hosts coped better with the weather conditions during the opening exchanges and went ahead on 14 minutes through a Jac Evans strike.

The away side restored parity when Wayne Thomas found the net with 34 on the clock.

Meurig Parry had a huge say in the tie late in the first half to put the home side ahead for a second time on 43 minutes, and the same player was on hand to double their advantage following the interval with 49 gone.

The tie was settled on 66 minutes when Dylan Hughes scored the fourth.
