Developers unveil plans for new restaurant and bar
PLANS to demolish former slate workshops to make way for a new restaurant, bar, retail space and overnight rooms have been unveiled by developers.
Gwynedd Council has received a planning application to raze Criccieth Craft Centre to the ground, making way for the new development in the heart of the town.
While no details on potential employment have yet been revealed, the current buildings are described by developers as a “dilapidated eyesore”, making clear that their plans aim to create a “vibrant hub creating social and economic regeneration to the immediate area and beyond.”
The planning documents supporting Lloyd Edwards’ application state the aim of producing sustainable, environmentally friendly, low carbon food and drink, serving a constantly evolving menu using seasonally available and locally sourced produce.
“We are proposing a new two storey venue in the centre of Criccieth offering locally produced food and drink within a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. As part of the development, four serviced studios will offer accommodation on site.”
According to 19th century maps, the site was formerly used as a smithy before being later transformed to an early car repair workshop and petrol filling station. In the early 1980s it became a slate workshop and craft retail shop, which remained in use until more recently becoming a charity shop before again falling out of use.
These new plans would not affect the listed Caffi Cwrt, which lies next door however.
The developers go on to state: “Simply by the creation of this development an unsightly and derelict building will be removed, improving the atmosphere of this area of the town and removing a magnet for anti- social behaviour.
“It will also bring more activity into this area at different times of the day due to the mix between the accommodation and restaurant/bar.
“This proposal aims to contribute to the vitality of Criccieth town centre and is an exciting opportunity for the future of the town. It will provide an anchor that will draw in both local residents and holidaymakers and help to balance the commercial centres within the town and contribute to the well being of neighbouring businesses too.”
They add:“Our aim is to transform the site from a run down building to a thriving locally run business.”
It’s expected Gwynedd Council’s planning department will consider the plans over the coming months.
