Double yellow plan to stop scenes like this...
PARKING CRACKDOWN AT BEAUTY SPOT PLAGUED BY ‘INCONSIDERATE DRIVERS’
DOUBLE yellow lines could be introduced on a busy road in Snowdonia in a bid to tackle “inconsiderate” parking in the area.
The lines would be on the road approaching Y Glyn in Llanberis, which occupies an often busy spot on the west side of Llyn Padarn.
Scenes of cars parked on either side of the road have become familiar sights over the past few years, particularly during the summer months.
Access to the road is often blocked as a result, with cars parked perilously close to the junction leading into it.
With the double yellow lines in place, road users would face fines of up to £70 if they parked in these spots.
Local councillor Kevin Jones says that “the current situation is incredibly dangerous and cannot be allowed to go on.”
The site is especially popular with families, something that Cllr Jones believes only adds to the need for parking restrictions in the area.
“We don’t want to be in a situation where a child is harmed or even worse, as a result of the parked cars,” he said.
Y Glyn is one of several places in Snowdonia that experiences issues with parking during peak times.
The situation reached something of a crisis point earlier this year, prompting a police crackdown which saw a number of vehicles towed away.
Cllr Jones says that setting up a park and ride on Glyn Rhonwy industrial estate would alleviate the issues in areas like Pen-Y-Pass, but Gwynedd Council has ruled this out as the site is currently “earmarked for developments”.
A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “Whilst most people who visit the popular Y Glyn site and nearby lagoons do so respectfully, unfortunately a small number do not do so.
“Over recent years, we have experienced problems with some visitors parking inconsiderately in the road leading up to Y Glyn and making access for others very difficult.
“As a result, we are currently consulting on a proposal to install double yellow lines on the road approaching Y Glyn in Llanberis.
“The proposed yellow lines on the approach road would help to ease traffic flow in this area and would not affect the capacity of the nearby car park.
“All comments submitted as part of the statutory consultation process will be considered in detail before a decision is taken on the mater.
“In terms of Glyn Rhonwy, the various plots on the site have been earmarked for developments that would create job opportunities locally.
“A number of exclusivity agreements are in place which means that other proposals for use of the site would not be possible at this time.”
