‘Animalistic’ thug kicked out and tried to bite cops during arrest

-

A THUG who kicked and bit two police officers as they tried to arrest him, was jailed on Friday.

Caernarfon Crown Court heard Toby Humphreys was behaving like an animal and one officer said it was the worst violence they had seen in 21 years.

Humphreys, 27, of Pensyflog, Porthmadog, admitted two charges of assaulting an emergency officer, on November 23, 2020.

The court heard his father called the police, after Humphreys took his car without consent.

The vehicle was later found and that evening his dad called again, saying he was back at his address and “kicking off”.

A sergeant and constable later attended and found Humphreys in a bedroom, said Karl Sholz, who was prosecuting.

“There was a strong smell of cannabis, he appeared to be heavily under the influence of drugs, was staring at officers with his mouth open, with a long streak of mucus... hanging from his nostrils,” he said.

When officers tried to arrest him he became aggressive, lashing out at them and a “violent struggle ensued” where he kicked and tried to bite the officers.

In the confusion, one of the officers ended up with a handcuff on his wrist and Humphreys twisted it, said Mr Sholz, and ignored attempts by his brother to reason with him.

Eventually they got him down stairs and outside, as he continued to struggle “scream and shout”.

His behaviour was described as “animalistic” and one officer pushed an emergency help button on his radio for back-up.

One of the officers said the violence directed at him by Humphreys, was “the worst he’d seen in his 21 years of service,” said Mr Sholz.

The court heard he had appeared before the court 31 times for 67 offences including assault, battery, assaulting emergency workers, aggravated vehicle taking and blackmail, receiving multiple custody sentences. The latest offence happened when he was on licence.

Defending, Jade Tufail said he had entered an early guilty plea, had been diagnosed with bipolar personality disorder and had been working to turn his life around. She said he had been let down by a construction employer and had returned to old habits of “drinking and smoking cannabis”, he was remorseful and wanted to apologise to the officers.

Sentencing Humphreys to six months for each offence, to run concurrently, Judge Timothy Petts said: “The behaviour towards the officers was clearly unacceptable.”
