‘Blessing’ baby is delivered in car park... to carer who hadn’t known she was expecting:

UNEXPECTED ‘BLESSING’ FOR 25-YEAR-OLD CARER AND PARTNER WHO WORKS IN THE STORE

- Amelia Shaw

A carer had no idea she was pregnant and got the surprise of her life when she gave birth in an Asda car park.

Delyth Jones, 25, unexpectedly introduced her son Harry Robert Alfie Stawman to the world on February 16 at the store’s Pwllheli car park.

Delyth told our website North Wales Live she felt no movements and had “no symptoms whatsoever” throughout the pregnancy.

It only occurred to her that she could in fact be in labour that morning when she started experiencing intense stomach pains.

Delyth, from Llanbedrog, had called her sister and her mum after the pain got worse and even joked to them that she thought she was having a baby, prompting them to call an ambulance.

Her boyfriend of seven years, Dean Stawman, 26, who works at the supermarket where his son was later born, had already left for work by the time Delyth went in to full-blown labour and didn’t find out he was a dad until son Harry’s dramatic arrival.

The pair had actually driven past each other while Delyth was in the back of the ambulance and Dean was driving home from work, absolutely oblivious to what had unfolded.

Delyth, who had been working up until two days before she went in to labour, said: “I honestly did not know I was pregnant - I had no symptoms at all.

“The only thing I did have was indigestion but that’s common for me anyway.

“I’d been having stomach pains overnight but I’d had that before so I didn’t think much of it. The next morning I woke up in absolute agony.

“I called my mum and my sister and when they came over they saw me and called an ambulance straight away.

“At that point we had no idea what was going on but I made a joke that I felt like I was having a baby. By the time the ambulance arrived I was on the floor and the pain had totally changed, it was a pain that felt like I needed to push, so we knew then that I was in labour.

“They got me in to the ambulance with the intention of taking me to Ysbyty Gwynedd but by the time we got to Pwllheli the paramedic said we needed to pull over because his head was coming out.

“We pulled in to Asda car park, one of the paramedics called the community midwife and within ten minutes of her arriving he was out.

“I said to them, ‘Tell me I haven’t just given birth in Asda’ and they said I had - and that it would be listed as his place of birth on his birth certificate. It must be fate that he was born at Asda with our connections.”

Delyth’s mum Andrea and sister Kate, who also works in Asda, had waited back at her house so they could tell Dean the incredible story.

Dean said: “I knew she wasn’t well that morning so when I got home and I saw her mum and sister I thought oh no what’s happening. They knew I was due home any minute so they just waited for me to tell me in person, I just was late shopping.

“Her mum told me to come in and sit down and basically said Delyth is on her way to hospital because she’s having a baby.

“After I found out I pottered around the house and kept myself busy until Delyth phoned me to let me know he’d arrived, I needed to stay busy until I knew they were OK.

“Obviously it was massively unexpected and we had absolutely nothing for him. He’s doing so well, they both are, it’s fantastic to have him in our lives.

“We have talked about having kids before so he really is a little blessing.

“Asda have been brilliant with letting me have some time off even though I’ve only been there a few months and we’ve had so much help around us.

“Delyth has taken to it so naturally, she’s such a caring and kind person.”

Little Harry weighed 7lbs 7oz when he was born and having spent 24 hours at Ysbyty Gwynedd with his mum he has now settled in nicely at home.

The couple said they’ve since had their fair share of people suggesting they should have called him George after the store’s clothing brand but say his name has “a very important meaning” to both of them.
