RGC FINISH STRONGLY TO SEE OFF PONTY

-

RGC PontyPRidd

RGC head coach Ceri Jones praised his team’s second-half performance as they beat Pontypridd at Parc Eirias.

Scrum-half Lucus Welsh opened the score for the visitors with a try after 15 minutes.

From the restart Pontypridd knocked on, and RGC took advantage when Dion Jones found a gap from close range to run in for the try before kicking the conversion.

The Gogs were offering quick ball, which was putting pressure on the visitor’s line.

It wasn’t long before Rhys Tudor galloped over in the corner for the second try for RGC.

The pace of the game dropped after half an hour and Ponty’s Lloyd brought his team to within two points with a penalty.

The second half didn’t match the intensity of the opening 40 minutes, but when Ethan Fackrell took a good ball to run at pace to go in for the score, RGC picked up the pace. Dion Jones extended the lead.

Momentum was with the Gogs and the bonus point try came from a sniping run of Efan jones to canter over the whitewash. Dion Jones was again on target.

Christian Hone was next to grab a try and he hurdled over the tackles on the 80th minute and in his 205th and final game for RGC Andrew Williams stepped up to hit the conversion, much to the joy of the squad, on the final whistle.

Head coach Ceri Jones was delighted, especially with the second-half performance

He said: “It was a fairly equal 40 minutes, and second half we imposed our game and put some pace and physicality into it.

“I think we capitalised on their errors, and probably for the first time this season we could relax with 10 minutes left.

“I have to congratulate James Andrew and Elis Evans for making their debuts and to Andrew Williams to sign off his great RGC career.”*
