“A dyna’r chwiban olaf i ddod ag artaith Port i ben!” / (“And there’s the final whistle to end the torture for Port.”) Thus spake the ‘Sgorio’ commentator at the end of a match in which Port were given a real footballing lesson, writes Treflyn Jones.
Yes, the ‘Sgorio’ cameras visited Y Traeth on an afternoon in which Port contrived to give one of their worst performances in living memory.
Let’s not take anything away from Rhuthun, however.
They were excellent for virtually the whole match.
As expected, therefore, it was the visitors who started brighter.
Indeed, they were able for much of the match to turn defence into attack at the blink of an eye.
After only one minute, Dan Cox made a dangerous run down the left flank and crossed low and hard into the box only for the man on the end of it to fluff his lines by hitting it too tamely into Morgan Jones’ arms.
Four minutes later, Ilan Hughes unleashed a good drive from the edge of the box but Morgan Jones covered it well.
It was in the 8th minute that Port conjured a clear cut scoring chance and, in truth, this was the only one in the whole match!
Meilir Williams was sent clean through by a fine through ball by Caio Hughes but the striker elected to send in a lob devoid of any sort of power rather than attempt to blast it beyond the dimunitive Goldston in the Rhuthun goal.
In fairness to Port, their passing in midfield was pretty good during the first half but we just couldn’t find a footing in the final third as the Rhuthun backline read situations well with timely challenges and looked very threatening on the break especially down the flanks.
Around the twenty minute mark, Rhuthun were beginning to dominate with confidence and pace and it was no surprise when they opened the scoring in the 37th minute courtesy of Ilan Hughes who sidefooted home from yet another low, accurate assist from Charlie Williams.
From then on, the visitors produced further openings but the half ended 0-1.
The game seemed virtually over a mere five minutes after the break when the men from the Vale of Clwyd made it 0-2. Morgan Jones initially produced a good one handed save but Llyr Morris patiently recycled the rebound and laid a chance on a plate to Sam Jones who made no mistake from close range.
Port’s game now became very ragged indeed with many misplaced passes and, more alarmingly, some bad lapses in concentration.
After 74’ minutes, literally seconds after entering the fray, substitute Liam Ellis slotted home after another quick and incisive move.
Shortly after, from a well-floated free-kick, a headed half-chance fell for the hosts’ Josh Banks but he couldn’t direct his effort under pressure form watchful defenders.
Four minutes from time Rhuthun’s Rob Owen put the icing on the cake with a powerful volley to make it a richly deserved 0-4 to the skillful visitors.
Next Saturday (oh, dear!) we shall visit Rhuthun for the return fixture (k.o.:2.30).
Let’s just hope we can play a little better than this.

● Following a short stay at the Traeth Caio Hughes will be returning to his college in the United States to prepare for the new term. The talented attacking midfielder has filled in for the club at a time when Ifan Emlyn and Alex Boss have suffered lengthy injuries. Despite the disappointing results during the period, he has displayed his undoubted talent.
Bidding farewell to the club Caio has tweeted;
“Diolch i Craig Papirnyk Steve Williams a Ben Ogilvy and all supporters and staff at CPD Porthmadog for making my short time at the club very enjoyable. Gutted I couldn’t help pick up more points but good luck for the rest of the season.
“Now back to the US for an important term.”
