Melbourn book their place in the Hereward Cup final after comfortable win
MELBOURN Squash Club’s second team secured their place in the Hereward Cup final with a 4-1 win in their semi-final at Peterborough III.
The match started with the top two strings, with Peterborough the first to register a victory as their top string player was too nimble in picking up short balls, taking Kate Bradshaw’s key strength away from her – the Melbourn number one lost 3-0. However the visitors responded when Jan Brynjolffssen (2) wore his younger opponent out,
Brynjolffssen moving up the gears from one-game all to cruise to a 3-1 win.
Melbourn skipper Colm O’Gorman (4) added another win, making light of feeling unwell and playing an uncomfortable opponent to recover from losing his opening game on a tie-break and battle back and win 3-1.
Matt Walker (5) then wrapped things up with a 3-0 win, which included a spectacular performance in game three as Walker’s drop shot was on fire; this allowed Walker to claim 14 consecutive rallies, powering from 1-2 down to win the game 15-2.
Gareth Jones (3) had a challenging match against a nationally ranked Junior player in the final rubber to start. The tie was still live when the players went on court, but had been decided long before they finished as the match of the night went the full distance –
Jones building a two game lead, only for the Peterborough kid to fight back to force a decider. That also fluctuated, the home player having the first match ball but Jones saving it and eventually triumphing 3-2.
