Treacherous conditions at Tarbert Open

-

FEMALE golfers from across Kintyre played through increasingly difficult conditions, with the early starters spared the worst of the weather.

Thirty one ladies travelled to Tarbert Golf Club last Sunday to compete in the Islay Frigate Hotel Ladies Open.

Fiona Johnstone took the title with 44 stableford points, a strong score given the testing conditions. In second place was Catriona McKnight on 42 points after a count back.

The best scratch score on the day was from Ann Gallagher of Machrihanish with a 76, with Tarbert ladies captain Heather Brownlie second on 79.

Deteriorated

A spokesperson said: ‘The morning players enjoyed the best of the weather before the day really deteriorated. The ladies who teed off in the worst of the weather should be commended for completing their rounds.

‘The players were also treated to a superb buffet, and the help of Steve Bleasby and Jim Brownlie was appreciated by all.’

On the gents side, nine teams took part in the Fishermen’s Cup in contrastingly superb overhead conditions last Saturday at Glenralloch.

The all-in draw produced some interesting pairings, with D Johnstone and G McCaffery coming first with 36, ahead of I MacArthur and D Sinclair on 34 and I Macalister and J Brownlie on 33 points.

A spokesperson said: ‘This was a better turnout than of late and with the Glenralloch course improving week on week, we hope members will continue to show their support as the season progresses.’
