Southend scouts scoot to Guernsey

- A report by the troop

THE FOURTH Argyll Scouts recently enjoyed a week’s summer camp in Guernsey.

We left at 7.30am, travelled by minibus to Glasgow Central Station, caught the train to Manchester Airport, and were in Guernsey by 9.30pm.

Our Scout minibus was waiting to take us to Second Guernsey headquarters, which was our campsite with excellent facilities.

We visited a number of beaches on the island and were impressed that each had a kiosk selling drinks and food. One even sold ‘ice-cream’ for dogs! In-between beaches we went to the Occupation Museum - the Germans occupied Guernsey in the war - the Little Chapel, the Shipwreck Museum and the museum at Castle Cornet in the capital, St. Peter Port.

We visited the Scout headquarters at Rue Maingys for rowing, kayaking, rafting, tomahawk throwing, archery and meeting other Scouts. On the evening before we returned home our Scout Leader had arranged to run the Second Guernsey Scout night.

We staged a Scottish evening with mini Highland games, Scottish dancing and a buffet which included cheeses from Inverloch Cheese Co, delicacies from The Old Smokehouse and (for adult guests) a taste of Springbank Whisky.

Our guests included the island commissioner, a retired island commissioner, Second Guernsey scout leaders and parents and members of the Guernsey Scottish Association.

We would like to thank the people of South Kintyre for supporting our fund-raising efforts, our sponsors, minibus drivers, scouts and parents for helping us have such a successful camp.
