Kerrien launches new firm

-

AFTER a career spanning over 20 years working in the third and public sector, Kerrien Grant felt it was time to become her own boss and set up a business.

A desire to work directly with innovative projects led Kerrien to launch kjginitiatives ltd, providing practical support to communities and social enterprises.

Based in Achnamara, Kerrien is currently working with the redevelopment project management team for Kilmartin Museum and is supporting the Rothesay Pavilion with project development and fundraising.

With support from Business Gateway Argyll and Bute, Kerrien, who formerly worked for Highlands and Islands Enterprise as head of strengthening communities in Argyll, is combining her skills and experience to ensure projects become a reality.

Kerrien said: ‘I bring 25 years of experience in supporting social enterprises and communities to kjginitiatives. In this time I’ve garnered an excellent understanding of the challenges that rural and island communities face.

Amazing results

‘I also have a real interest in community land ownership and the opportunities that brings, so it made sense for me to set up on my own. I can use my skills in business planning, project development and facilitation to help others deliver amazing results.

‘Business Gateway provided a listening ear as I planned the business and gave me sound advice which helped to develop my thinking. In particular, I was given great help with social media, marketing and advice on invoicing and contracts.’

Kerrien is now looking to add to her list of clients and work in collaboration with other consultants to form a team-based approach.

She added: ‘I am working on a number of exciting projects, including being part of a project management team for Kilmartin Museum with Luing Consultancy, which is fantastic. I am also keen to get more engaged with community land acquisition projects as I am passionate about community ownership as it is a rewarding way for communities to become more sustainable.

‘It has been a dream of mine to set up my own business so I’m delighted that kjginitiatives has got off to such a great start. I moved to Argyll with my husband 12 years ago, so being based here and running a business is wonderful and I’m excited about the future.’

Donald Melville, business adviser with Business Gateway, said: ‘Although Kerrien has vast experience, she had never set up a business herself before and so she came to us for advice. Through our one-toone advice, signposting knowledge and practical support, Kerrien is now in a stronger position to develop and expand ltd.’
