Sea cadet cruises through seamanship exam
CAMPBELTOWN sea cadet Ellie Lowrie is on the crest of a wave after gaining her advanced seamanship qualification.
Ellie, 14, is one of just 45 young people to achieve the award in the UK this year.
Ellie, who attends the Campbeltown Sea Cadets Unit, sailed through challenges testing her rope work, rigging, splicing, whipping and canvas work.
The qualifications are supported by a naTHE tional partnership of Carnival Corporation and Cunard.
A spokesperson for the Sea Cadets said: ‘This scheme enables 14,000 cadets aged 10 to 18 to broaden their career options in the maritime industry.
‘Across the UK, young people gain a seamanship qualification with Sea Cadets, learning a range of skills essential to operating in the maritime environment.
‘It is the foundation of a career at sea and any water-based activity.’
Ellie, who is an Ordinary Cadet, said: ‘I am really pleased to have my advanced seamanship qualification.
‘I enjoy Sea Cadets – I like the boating, especially sailing and kayaking. Maybe I’d like to have a career at sea.
‘It has given me a lot of opportunities.’
Her mum, Helen, added: ‘I’m very proud of her for this – she thoroughly enjoyed it.’ Youngsters who fancy a life before the mast can come along to a parade night in the Cadet Hall at Campbeltown’s Hazelburn Business Park on Monday evenings from 6.45pm to 9pm.
