Clothing chief retires

-

A MEN’S outfitter is hanging up his measuring tape and soon a new owner will be suited and booted.

A MEN’S clothing shop chief will shut his doors on March 31 after nearly a quarter of a century at Campbeltown’s A P Taylor.

Back in 1993, John McCormick, 58, took on the lease of the Main Street men’s outfitters from its eponymous owner, Sandy Taylor.

Cameron McAlister, who had previously worked for Sandy, was joined by John and the pair built a reputation for friendliness and customer service selling everything from shirts to socks, hiring kilts for formal occasions and retailing everything a man could need to cut a dash.

John said: ‘I am giving some advance notice in case people have credit or unused vouchers as they will not be able to spend them after the end of March.

‘I have had some great laughs over the years with customers. The Christmas lights switch-on was always a great night.

‘One year Rangers’ greatest ever goalie, Andy Goram, came in after the switch-on, like a Pied Piper with what seemed like every child in town behind.

‘He resorted to signing his name on their foreheads.’

John’s departure will not be the end for A P Taylor as Archie and Tracy Millar has taken on the lease and intend to continue the business. John added: ‘I am pleased that someone local has taken over and the tradition will continue.’
