Oban Saints shatter young Pupils’ dream run at recent Argyll derby

-

THE PUPILS’ youth team suffered their first defeat of the season when they travelled to play their 13th league game against rivals Oban Saints at a sun- drenched AWP at Oban High School. Despite starting the stronger team, the Pupils rued missing a few glaring chances, especially from set pieces.

After half an hour Oban took the lead when Litster was dispossessed and the left winger beat Souden to the byeline and rolled the ball across goal for an easy tap in.

Now enjoying most of the possession, the home team scored a debatable second goal, with both players yards offside when played through but the goal was allowed to stand.

Two goals down at halftime, the Pupils never really got back into the game and were lucky the referee tried to make up for his mistake when Oban got clean through a couple of times only to be called back for offside when their forwards had made some great diagonal runs.

It was against the run of play when a free kick from McCallum was flicked home by Souden to make it allto - play - for again.

Just when it looked like they might get something, the Oban winger was fouled in the box and the resulting penalty was gleefully knocked home.

Despite creating a few chances with McCallum’s free kick smashing the bar, Oban held out to record a deserved win, though the Pupils will be disappointed they kept their worst performance of the season for this game and will need to bounce back quickly to keep their season alive.
