Visitors’ impromtu beach clean

-

Sir, Further to the Courier issue about litter on Friday April 14. I visited Campbeltown with my daughter for a short Easter holiday.

Generally on a beach I will pick up any rubbish. On Good Friday evening we went for a walk on the causeway to Davaar island.

Moments after leaving the road there was lots of blue plastic that turned out to be what I think are fishermen’s gloves. I picked up a discarded winkle bag and filled it with these gloves by the time we reached the island and due to the weight had to carry it over my shoulder.

It is devastating to see the damage that this does to marine life. In addition it is ruining what should be a stunning walk for tourists.

Instead it just looks like an uncared for part of the environment. The fishermen should be ashamed of themselves when it is so easy to take them back to shore.

The blue gloves stand out like a sore thumb. Plastic breaks down and goes into the food chain and ends up on our plates when we eat fish. Seabirds have a feeling of being starving but their stomachs can be full of plastic. Name and address supplied.
