Tails from If Only They Could Talk
ALL CREATURES great and small heard James Herriot’s son speak about life as a vet at the Rotary Club of Campbeltown’s 46th charter dinner.
Last Friday, president Alistair Cousin welcomed a large crowd of members, partners and guests to this annual celebration of the club’s 1971 foundation.
Mr Cousin intro- duced Hilary Lord, president of the Inner Wheel Club of Campbeltown, who proposed a toast to the Rotary Club and he replied before giving a brief review of the early part of his year in office.
Mr Cousin introduced Jim Wight, son of author James Herriot, educated and trained in Glasgow, who is remembered from the television series: All Creatures Great and Small.
In a wide-ranging speech, Mr Wight spoke of his own experiences as a vet in Yorkshire. He emphasised the genuine experiences described by his father in all his books, something which was also portrayed in the television series.
Professor Ron Roberts gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the company and spoke briefly of his own knowledge of James Herriot and also of Jim Wight.
The evening closed with a toast to Rotary International.
