Savage winner as sun beats down

KINTYRE women runners cruised along the Crinan canal’s towpath as they dominated the annual Puffer race.

In the senior men’s race unaffiliat­ed David Savage’s 45:22 placed him 32 seconds ahead of Campbeltow­n Running Club’s (CRC) Stuart McGeachy’s 45:54 with Drew Dutton CRC third on 49:11.

The senior ladies’ race was won by Jennifer Martin, CRC 53:23. Unaffiliat­ed Kirsty Duff’s 58:34 split the team mates, with CRC’s Emma Morran taking third in 59:17.

A Puffer spokesman said: ‘Thanks should go to the 19th Argyll Scouts and Explorer Scouts who provided catering.

‘Soups, sandwiches, cakes and hot drinks were available in Ardrishaig Hall for runners and supporters.

‘Special thanks to our sponsor Scottish Sea Farms, our fantastica­lly supportive volunteer marshals, Bill McCallum and the Timing Team, the Red Cross first aiders, Scottish Canals and the runners.’

Other top three placed runners in each catego- ry were as follows: Veteran men: all CRC: 1 Darren Renton 54:41, 2 Alisdair O’May 55:59 and Stephen Blackstock 56.38. Super veteran men: 1 Stephen Whiston, Mid Argyll Tri and Cycle Club 52:00, 2 Alan Cockburn, PH Racing Club 54:51 and 3 Ralph Hill, CRC, 57:01. Vintage men: 1 Brian Hughes, Glasgow South Road Runners 51:22, 2 Andrew Law, Victoria Park City of Glasgow AC 52:24 and 3 Brian Howie, Edinburgh Athletic Club 01:03:50.

Veteran ladies: all CRC: 1 Jennifer Reid 54:48, 2 Katie Ferguson 59:59 and 3 Lorraine MacDonald 1:06:48. Super veteran ladies: all CRC: 1 Jocelyn Richard 1:03:24, 2 Susan Turner 1:06:09 and 3 Janette Hannah 1:10:36. Vintage Ladies: 1
