Dram-atic showing in former whisky capital of the world

-

CAMPBELTOWN audiences will be among the first in the UK to get a chance to watch the rebooted version of the classic movie Whisky Galore!

The remake will feature in the Victoria Hall’s final monthly showings on Saturday May 6 and Sunday May 7, before the refurbished picture house reopens.

It offers a fresh take on the classic comedy inspired by true events, with a newly added subplot.

When a stranded ship washes up on nearby rocks, the villagers of the tiny Scottish island of Todday are desperate to plunder the onboard cargo of whisky, particularly since their island is perilously close to being without booze due to wartime prohibitions.

The pompous Captain Wagget (Eddie Izzard) is keen to thwart all attempts to liberate the amber nectar, while local hero Macroon (Gregor Fisher) leads ingenious endeavours to befuddle the military’s efforts.

A wry and charming delight, the cast also includes Kevin Guthrie and James Cosmo.

Also for the more grown-up audience, Viceroy’s House takes us on an historic tour of what is now the official home of India’s president.

Set in 1947, as the 300 years of British rule in India are coming to an end, Viceroy’s House sees Lord Mountbatten (Hugh Bonneville), assume the post of the last Viceroy, charged with handing India back to its people.

Upstairs in Viceroy’s House lived Mountbatten, his wife (Gillian Anderson) and daughter (Lily Travers); downstairs lived their 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants.

As the political elite - Nehru, Jinnah and Gandhi - converged on the House to wrangle over the birth of independent India, conflict erupted.

And in the background, a pair of young lovers find themselves caught up in the seismic end of Empire, in conflict with the Mountbattens and with their own communities.

In another movie remake, Kong: Skull Island tells the story of a group of scientists who venture to a remote uncharted Pacific Island, but its natural beauty harbours some terrifying secrets.

King Kong is revered by the locals as a god – but where there’s a god, there’s a devil!

The iconic ape roars back onto the screen in this spectacular epic starring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman and John C. Reilly.

The weekend also includes family fun with Smurfs: Lost Village, which sees the return of the beloved blue creatures in an all-new adventure.

A mysterious map sets Smurfette (Demi Lovato) and her friends on a thrilling race through the Forbidden Forest to find a mysterious lost village.

Embarking on a roller coaster journey full of action and danger, with the evil wizard Gargemel hot on their tail, the Smurfs are on a course that leads to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history!

Also for the children, Dreamworks’ The Boss Baby is a suit-wearing, briefcase-carrying baby business tycoon, voiced by Alec Baldwin.

When Tim Templeton’s new baby brother arrives, he wasn’t expecting to team up with him for a secret mission to thwart the evil Puppy Co.

Tim and the Boss Baby must put a stop to their wicked schemes to steal all the love in the world in this original animated comedy from the director of Madagascar.

Finally, an animated Disney classic gets a sumptuous live-action reboot, sure to be enjoyed by both youngsters and grown ups, as Emma Watson and Dan Stevens star as the Beauty and the Beast.

The tale as old as time is the story of Belle, spirited, intelligent and beautiful, who is taken prisoner by a beast and held in his castle.

She gradually begins to befriend the castle’s enchanted staff – Cogsworth the clock, Lumiere the candlestick and Mrs Potts the teapot.

Slowly she begins to look past her captor’s monstrous appearance, falling for the kind-hearted prince he once was.

An all-star cast including Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson, Kevin Kline and Josh Gad brings this magical remake to the screen.
