mid-argyll show
The Mid Argyll Agricultural Show is a major celebration of rural life, held annually on the second Saturday in August. At this hugely popular event, to be held on Saturday August 12, hundreds of exhibitors will take part in baking, produce, crafts, flowers and vegetable competitions, as well as the ever-popular dog show and livestock classes. Then there is the hugely entertaining terrier race, which is rarely predictable and always great fun for dogs and humans. A brand new attraction at this year’s show will be Ewan MacInnes and friends with four impressive sets of coach-and-horses ferrying passengers to and from the showground in fine style. Farmers and breeders from near and far will bring along and show top quality cattle, sheep, dogs,
horses, ponies and poultry. Other popular attractions are the display of vintage tractors and the delightful pets section. And then there are the terrier races – always fun, never predictable and almost guaranteed to spark the odd wee scrap here and there. Also on the day there will be the digger challenge, where the winner will receive a cash prize. There will even be a ‘guess the weight of Terry the turkey’ competition, with Terry himself present on the day. On offer to the winner will be an 8lb turkey, courtesy of HD Ferguson & Son Butchers, Lochgilphead. After the success of last year’s gundog scurry, this competition will once again take place from 11am onwards. One of the show highlights arrives at 3pm with the adjudication of the supreme champion of the show for 2017, judged across all species and breeds.
Away from the competition side, the many trade stands give an opportunity to browse and buy everything from crafts, clothing, toys and produce to agricultural machinery and equipment. There are children’s competition and rides to keep the little ones amused, plus a climbing wall for the more adventurous, all ensuring that families enjoy a great day out. A free shuttle bus service will be in operation from Lochgilphead front, taking people into the showground via the school car park.
