Octogenarian’s sponsored walk

-

A CAMPBELTOWN octogenarian has walked the long and winding road down to the Mull of Kintyre lighthouse and back for charity.

When Agnes Stewart turned 80 in December last year she wanted to set herself a challenge. She decided to take on the arduous task of walking what she describes as the ‘one mile down and six miles back up’ trek from the Gap, the last part of the Mull of Kintyre road accessible to cars, to the 18th-century lighthouse at the bottom and back.

As her daughter, also Agnes Stewart, runs the Campbeltown charity CGS4-Gambia, Agnes decided to raise funds for the group at the same time through sponsorship.

The grammar school students have been busy fundraising for their next trip to Gambia in October, and Agnes hoped she would make around £200 in sponsorship to add to the fund.

One week on from her walk, Agnes’s husband, Allister, turned 80 and asked for donations to his wife’s fundraiser instead of presents, bringing Agnes’s total to just over £1,000.

Agnes has been completely humbled, not only by the amount of money raised, but also the level of support and kind comments from all quarters. She is very grateful to her ‘support team’ of her daughter Agnes, husband Allister, and Jim, Alison and Laura Farren, who joined her on the walk.

Donations can still be made via the online page at BT MyDonate/CGS4Gambia or to Agnes herself until August 31.
