Thought for the Week

- With Marilyn Shedden

‘WILL we be friends forever?’ asked Piglet. ‘Even longer,’ Pooh answered.

I love the stories of Winnie the Pooh by A A Milne and think they are just as enchanting for adults as they are for children.

The quote about friends is one of my favourites and I think we all have some ‘forever’ friends in our lives, if we are lucky.

I was greatly honoured to give the eulogy for one of my dearest friends and found it both the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do and the most special thing I’ve ever been asked to do.

Tommy was a ‘forever’ friend and I used this quote in his eulogy, for I believe that Tommy and I will continue our friendship on the other side of time.

There are certain bonds that will never be broken for we have shared tears and laughter and time.

Youngsters now refer to their closest friend as a ‘bestie’ and this person is very important in their lives. Secrets are shared and confidences are entrusted to the bestie.

I have noticed special friendships from within the animal kingdom too, and many famous films have been based on this.

Our own dogs have formed a great friendship with Daisy recently. Daisy is an adorable gentle Westie, and our collie Carys, who is very shy of other dogs, just loves to meet up with her.

They have struck up a great friendship which goes beyond our understanding but it is real.

I think they too will be friends forever, and now Carys can say with confidence that her bestie is a Westie.

Friendship isn’t about who you’ve known the longest – it’s about who came and never left your side.
