Rock fan’s MOK magic in Australia
A MUSIC fan based in Jakarta, Indonesia, jetted 1,600 miles to rock up at the Paul McCartney concert in Perth, Australia.
For months Terry Gray, originally from Campbeltown, had been telling his half dozen friends who made the trip with him about how McCartney had put his hometown on the map.
The concert, last Saturday, was the first leg of McCartney’s One on One tour.
The 75-year-old rock- er’s two-and-a-half hour show covered many hits, including the Christmas number one, Mull of Kintyre.
This week Terry, who left Campbeltown in 1971 but will return this Christmas, told the Courier: ‘I went to the outdoor concert with six friends of different nationalities and had been reciting to them the story of Mull of Kintyre and the 40year anniversary since it was No 1 on Top of the Pops in the UK.
‘I stated there was little chance of him doing the number ‘cos he doesn’t have a pipe band with him.
Ecstatic
‘How wrong could I be when, as the encore at the end if the show, he broke into the initial chords, and how ecstatic was I when the pipes and drums entered the stage.
‘The West Australia Police Pipe Band did an exceptional rendition and brought the house down as can be seen on YouTube.
‘It is a big story in a small town. Especially given the anniversary of the hit.
‘I’m sure Paul, in his own intimate style was thinking about the “wee toon” when he planned this, cos it didn’t just happen on the spur of the moment.
‘It was very well planned and orchestrated.
‘The Mull of Kintyre is definitely on the map in the eyes and ears of 23,000 ecstatic Paul McCartney fans on Saturday night in Australia.’
