Carradale polish off Boswell

Greater Glasgow AFL

Carradale 5 Boswell 1

TWO GOALS from Polish striker Nanek helped Carradale see off new league contenders Boswell.

The Johnstone team, who have played in the Paisley and District AFL for the past 30 years, travelled to Kintyre for the first time since joining the GGAFL at the start of the season.

The game kicked off in perfect conditions for football with very little wind.

The visitors started with a very defensive set-up of two banks of four which frustrated the Kintyre side time and time again.

Carradale missed two glorious chances to take the lead in the first half.

The first was midway through the half, when Norris sent in a dangerous cross from the right to pick out Croll but he screwed his shot wide from eight yards.

The second chance, in the 32nd minute, fell to McCormick. A DJ head flick sent the striker free on a oneon-one with the keeper. His shot beat the keeper but the ball finished on the wrong side of the post, bringing the first half to a close with a 0-0 scoreline.

The home side were stunned when, two minutes into the second half, a hopeful ball up the park saw the back four missing as Boswell’s number 10 had space and time to lob McMillan for the opening goal for the Renfrewshire club.

The McFadyens Transport-sponsored side responded immediately. McIlroy picked up the ball some 35 yards from goal and moved in a bit before the left-back hit a thunderbolt shot that crashed into the net giving the diving keeper no chance.

Just before the hour mark Carradale took off a defender and put an attacking midfielder on to try to make the break. With so much possession of the ball, they did not have to wait long for the second goal.

McIlroy passed crossfield to DJ and his first-time cross found MacBrayne. Arriving late in the box, he swept the ball home from 10 yards.

In the 63rd minute, the Kintyre side scored their third when Johnny McCormick passed to DJ. The striker broke down the left side, picked out Croll and made no mistake by slotting the ball into the net from close range.

The home side put on two other subs with 20 minutes to go, McCallum and Nanek replacing MacPhail and McCormick, and it was not long before the Polish striker got on the goal sheet.

Taking the ball to the goal with two defenders around him, he used his strength to shrug them off, before turning and toe-poking the ball home past the advancing keeper for Carradale’s Nanek, who fourth. stands head and shoulders above his team-mates, then powered a second into the net. With four minutes left and a bit of luck, the visiting keeper, trying to clear his lines, belted the ball against the advancing striker. It struck him and rebounded into the net to complete the scoring. Man of the match was Stuart MacPhail.

The match ball was sponsored by David and Phyllis Washington from Torrisdale.

Next week’s fixture is against league leaders Newshot AFC.
