Guild prays for Suriname
KILLEAN and Kilchenzie Guild observed World Day of Prayer at A’Cleit on March 2 with this year’s order of service produced by the Christian women of Suriname, on the theme ‘God’s creation is very good’.
This was felt to be especially appropriate in the view of the Blue Planet television series and the work being done in local schools on pollution in Suriname, formerly Dutch Guyana.
It is a beautiful country with many natural resources but is being pillaged to the detriment of its environment, and its turtles are
being killed to harvest their eggs.
The event was delivered at A’Cleit by Maggie Young, Tricia Fair and Marion McDonald with guild members from Clachan and Southend in attendance.
The service included a reading from Genesis, telling the original story of the creation, with thoughts relating the beauty of Kintyre to the difficulties of Suriname and prayers that all might help to prevent further spoiling of natural resources.
The singing, always a feature of these meetings, was enhanced
by the playing of Rev Catriona Hood.
All present were even given the opportunity to sample a Surinamese delicacy, a sweet including tamarind seeds.
There was an accompanying activities sheet to help those present realise that the solutions to preserving the environment do not always lie with governments, but with small changes we all can make to our everyday lives.
The guild would like to thank the people who helped, read, led thoughts, prepared the hall and who produced teas and home baking.
