Kintyre champions at sports hall athletics final

-

THERE were two Kintyre champions at the Argyll final of the sports hall athletics contest, with young athletes from the area excelling in many of the categories.

Dalintober’s Jack Green won the under nine section and Lewis Gilchrist, from Rhunahaorine, was champion of the under-11 contest.

Jack, who was the under seven champion in 2017, won both running events as well as the long and triple jumps, doing well to repeat his success in the older age group.

His mum, Laura Paterson, who competed for Carradale, was the under nine Argyll champion in 1994, the first year the indoor competitions were held in Argyll.

Lewis placed first in five out of the seven events in the under-11 sections, winning both running events and the long and triple jumps and the shot putt.

The boys competed against more than 100 youngsters at Atlantis Leisure in Oban last Sunday, in the last in a series of competitions held across Argyll by Mid Argyll Athletic Club, and they weren’t the only Kintyre athletes to do well.

Carla Renton, from Castlehill won the javelin and placed third in the under seven girls’ contest, while Erin Renton, also from Castlehill, was third in the under nine section.

Castlehill’s Violet Campbell won the long jump and triple jump, coming third in the under-11 competition, behind last year’s under nine champion, first placed Ellen MacRae, from Salen, and Mia Campbell from St. Columba’s who came second.

Carradale’s Anna Gemmill, winner of the shot putt, came third in the under-13 category, with Kirstin Blair from Crinan in first place and Izzy Crawford, from Furnace, second.

Castlehill’s Ryan Johnstone placed third in the under-seven section won by Jack, sharing first place in the speed bounce with second placed Marco MacGregor from Rockfield.

Dalintober’s Oliver Reid, winner of the triple jump, came third in the incredibly close under-11 boys’ sec-

tion, only one point separating him from the champion, Jacques Coates, from Park, and half a point from second placed George Pagan, from Rockfield.

The organisers wish to thank all the young athletes and parents for supporting all the local competitions and the Argyll final.
