Son of ‘Wee Joe’ takes title
Kenny MacFarlane took the top prize in a Tarbert Golf Club competition remembering his father. Beautiful overhead conditions greeted the players and guests at Glenralloch for the ‘Wee Joe’ memorial shield last Saturday. The course was in terrific condition thanks to Graham Prentice and his volunteers so there could be no excuse for poor scoring. Twenty-eight players set off for the main prize last, with another nine taking part in the ‘non-golfer’ category.
Early pace
David Ronald set the early pace with 37 Stableford points which was good enough for fourth place, edging out Keith Blair with the better inward half. Third place went to Iain MacArthur with 39 points which include a back nine of 21 points. In second place was Malcolm McAlpine who always shows great enthusiasm for the golf, returning 40 Stableford points to lose out on winning virtue of the poorer inward half. A proud Kenny MacFarlane took top honours with 40 points with his storming back nine of 23 points giving him victory in his father’s memorial shield. In the non-golfer category, Kenny Prentice took third place, Paul West was second and Bob Barclay was first. Longest drive at the second, Kenny MacFarlane, and closest to the pin at the eighth was David Lamont. A closest to the pin challenge at the ninth with a football, saw James Ronald take the whisky. A great day was enjoyed by all with the MacFarlane family raising £320 for Argyll Cancer Care. This Saturday, Dodie’s Cup takes place. Last weekend, in perfect golfing conditions, Glenralloch hosted the Harbour Gallery Open, which was sponsored by Stuart Herd. The recent good spell of weather made the course quite tricky and the firm conditions made for some imaginative shots around the greens.
Overtaken
From the early ballot James Smyth went to the top of the leaderboard with a net 63 before being overtaken by his cousin Iain Johnstone Jnr who had a 61. In the scratch section David ‘Del Boy’ Lamont took the lead with a one over par 67, followed by Iain Macalister on 68 and Angus MacFarlane on 70. As often happens in these events the leader board changed in both sections with the last two groups of the day altering the final standings. Calum MacLean edged into third place with a 63. Jimmy Litster matched David Lamont’s 67 but had a better inward half to take the top scratch prize, however his brother Stuart took top honours on the day, winning the Harbour Gallery Open with a 72-12 for a net 60. Longest drive at the second went to Duane Coetzer with Iain Macalister closest to the pin at the eighth. Club president Chris Smyth thanked Stuart for his continued sponsorship and support to the club, Graham Prentice for his course presentation and to the ladies of the club for looking after everyone so well. A delighted Stuart Litster received his painting from Stuart Herd. Final standings: Net S Litster 60, I Johnstone Jnr 61, C MacLean 62 and J Smyth (BIH) 62. Scratch: J Litster 67 (BIH), D Lamont 67, I Macalister 68 and A MacFarlane 70.
