Dunaverty championsh­ips set for exciting finale

Beset by wind and rain, 34 Dunaverty members had difficulty returning good scores in the first round of the club championsh­ips. Both the scratch and handicap sections were very close. Defending champion Greg Watson, playing in the evening, carded a creditable 68 to lead the scratch section. This put him a shot clear of Donald McNeil, with current senior champion Duncan Watson III one behind Donald. Vice-captain John Brown, playing off 13, had an excellent net score of 59 to go in front in the handicap section by four shots from David MacBrayne and Donald McNeil, both of whom were on 64. CSS was 64. 1st round results; Scratch: 1 Greg Watson 68, 2 Donald McNeil 69, 3 Duncan Watson III 70, 4 Lee Mathieson 72 (better last 6) 5 John Brown 72, 6 Campbell MacBrayne 73. Handicap: John Brown 7213-59, 2 David MacBrayne, 75-12=63(bih), 3 Donald McNeil 69-6=63, 4 Duncan Watson 111 70-5=65(bih), 5 Campbell MacBrayne 738=65, 6 Raymond Harvey 81-15=66. CSS was 63. With an improvemen­t in the weather scores were somewhat better in the second round. In the scratch section, Lee Mathieson produced a 66 to lead by virtue of a better inward half from Donald MacNeil, also on 66, with former multi champion George MacMillan close behind on 67. Alex Roxburgh won the handicap section with a net 59 from Donald McNeil’s 60 and Lee Mathieson on 62. A very close competitio­n in both sections is anticipate­d in the final two rounds tomorrow, Saturday. Two round combined scratch result: 1 Donald McNeil 69+66=135, 2 Greg Watson 68+68=136, 3 Lee Mathieson 72+66= 138, 4 George MacMillan 73+67=140, 5 Duncan Watson III 70+78=148, Joint 6 Ross Sinclair 75+74=149 and Campbell MacBrayne 73+76=149. Combined handicap: 1 Donald McNeil 63=60=123, Equal 2 David MacBrayne 63+65=128 and John Brown 59+69=128 3, Lee Mathieson 68+62=130, 5 Alex Roxburgh 72+59=131, 6 John Nutt 66+66=132.
