Carni-West aims to capture the true spirit of MOK Fest
The 26th Mull of Kintyre Music Festival is well under way, with Wednesday’s Festival Gaelic Concert and last night’s Young Folk Night scheduled to have rocked Campbeltown. This year, MOKFest favourite, the Festival Club, in its second year, moves to the Kirk Street Hall from 1pm to 5.30pm tomorrow (Saturday). The massive music session will be fronted by Western Sound with Hope Strang and the MOKFest mega session, featuring local and visiting musicians, many of whom are performing at the concerts over the weekend, also performing. Tea, coffee and refreshments will be served and entry is by donation. The venue will be laid out with tables and chairs so head along early if you want to enjoy an afternoon of music in a relaxed atmosphere. This year, Saturday also features the first Carni-West, formerly known as the festival parade. The carnival-themed event kicks off at 12.30pm and spectators should expect enthusiasm and colour, with the recent rebranding aiming to promote the Campbeltown spirit. If that wasn’t enough, prizes will be given out to the most entertaining entry as well as the best motor vehicle. The winners of these titles will be presented with the Festival Cup and Phoenix Shield after the event. This year, Saturday’s openair entertainment moves from Kinloch Green to Springbank Distillery, called Up The Close. Expect all the usual features, including live music from Deep Joy, The Twisted Melons and Treble Trouble with dance acts Footnotes and Steps also performing. Funky Chicken will be in the children’s field to entertain and face-paint the younger festival-goers. There will be no shortage of music across the weekend, with ticketed concerts in the Victoria Hall and Heritage Centre featuring The Time Frequency (TTF), Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham, The Grouse Ceilidh Band, Kim Carnie and Innes White, Eddie Seaman and Luc McNally and Slainte Davaar Allstars and many more.
