Your future is in your hands

So grab it with both of them and make sure you have the best possible outcome

-

By now everyone – from your granny to next door’s cat – will know how well you did when the exam results came out on August 7 and there might be a few wee anxious moments here and there if you didn’t. Don’t worry, everyone is on your side, come what may, to make sure you get the best possible outcome – no matter what. This year, across Scotland, there were 147,000 Higher passes with a pass rate of 76.8 per cent, a slight drop compared with 77.0 per cent last year.

There was a record number of entries for Advanced Higher (24,331) since changes to the qualification were made in the 2015-16 academic year; with attainment rates remaining high at 80.5 per cent. UCAS, Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, says 23.3 per cent of all 18-year-olds in Scotland will be starting university this year – a record high with a five per cent increase in students from outside the EU being accepted to study in Scotland.

Joanna Murphy who chairs the National Parent Forum of Scotland said: ‘Each year at this time I remind parents that it’s not just about exam results. We must recognise and celebrate the breadth of young people’s achievements today and every day.

‘Our young people need to feel supported on their journey to the next stage, exploring the many pathways, in education or elsewhere, that are available. ‘The days before the exam results are revealed can be very stressful for young people and their parents. Now they have arrived, take time to reflect on the best course of action, considering all options carefully. ‘There are plenty of helpful resources available for parents and their children. Have a look on our website for helpful links www.parentforumscotland.org. uk. Speaking from experience, I know that the Skills Development Scotland Exam Results Helpline offers young people and their parents and carers the chance to talk to someone who is impartial, which helps you to step back and take stock at what can be a stressful time.

The following pages are packed full of information to make the transition to college or into a career easier with loads of advice from some of the best institutions and organisations around.

‘If your results weren’t as expected, or you just want to talk over your choices, SDS advisers can talk you through the wide range of options available to you and reminds young people no matter what results they achieve, there is always a way forward.’
