Nursery’s outdoor play recognised

-

Campbeltown Nursery Centre has been shortlisted for a national Play More award. Play More was set up to help deserving nurseries improve their outdoor play areas with financial support or murals. It is an initiative which was set up by nappy cream manufacturers Sudocrem to encourage parents and children to get back in touch with nature and explore the greatest playground on earththe outdoors. As part of the campaign a survey asked 200 children, between the ages of four and eight years old, to identify some of the creepy crawlies in Britain. The survey revealed that nine out of 10 children were unable to recognise a butterfly even though there is an abundance of native British insects, with around 27,000 insect species calling the UK home. Moreover, 51 per cent did not know what a bumblebee looks like. And, surprisingly, one in three did not realise that bees make honey. As part of the campaign, Play More asks parents to nominate a deserving nursery and Campbeltown Nursery Centre has been shortlisted to receive support for their outdoor play area. One parent who nominated the nursery said: ‘This nursery should win because they work so hard to give the best environment possible for the children. They encourage the children to be outside in all weathers and give them the support to take risks through play. ‘They are constantly trying to raise funds to continue to develop the outside area. ‘However as we are a rural area – there is only so much you can ask of the local community.’
