Carradale golf club stalwart Margaret receives honour

-

Club committees have always reserved honorary and life membership of a club for those who have contributed at the highest level. In this case the level of success and contribution over the years is undoubted and Carradale Golf Club is delighted to announce the award of life membership to Margaret Campbell, writes Sandy Neil. Margaret learned to play golf at Inverkip when she was 10 years old and fondly remembers the minister who taught golf in the church hall using a rushed mat hanging from the roof as a target area. In 1970 Margaret moved to the area and joined Carradale Golf Club, but as Carradale was not an affiliated club with the Scottish Ladies’ Golf Union she also joined Machrihanish to keep her handicap. Margaret has made a significant impact at the club and especially in the ladies’ section – she was instrumental in setting up the section resulting in the ladies being awarded an official handicap in the mid-seventies to replace the Carradale ladies’ handicap. Margaret’s playing achievements are impressive locally – and further afield – having been matchplay champion 12 times and ladies’ champion twice at Carradale. However, this is not the limit of her commitment to the club as Margaret has been ladies’ captain eight times, president for four years, ladies’ treasurer, matchplay and handicap secretary, as well as being a very keen junior golf coach over a long period and officially for eight years. Margaret is a great ambassador for junior coaching and has been out again coaching local primary children over the summer as this is where the future of golf and the club lies. There are many high level golfers across Scotland who learned to play on the nine-hole course at Carradale and still keep a strong connection with the club. Margaret is also well known for her impromptu poems at golf events where she always sums up the day so appropriately. The club would like to thank Margaret for all her hard work and support, and wishes her many more happy years playing off the tees at Carradale.
