Grey matter is tested in Tayinloan
Nature, history, music, television and food were hot topics in Tayinloan Village Hall’s annual quiz. The fundraiser was well attended last Thursday night with 10 teams hailing from the length and breadth of Britain, from Orkney to Cambridge, turning up to compete for the coveted Tayinloan Hall Trophy. In the first few rounds, the usual suspects slotted into the top spots as quiz master Gordon Caskie read the questions with his typical repartee. A multiple choice round and a picture round, where participants had to name various famous faces, logos, dog breeds, flags and cartoon characters, added some variety to the night. A break for a light supper of sandwiches, quiche, sausage rolls and numerous homebaked sweet treats revitalised the brain cells and left everyone ready for the second half. A Family Fortunes-style round, asking people to guess the top answer given by 100 people to 10 simple questions, was a new addition this year. As the quiz progressed, two or three teams looked likely to triumph but in the end, the Peninver Orkadians were the champions with a score of 90, eight clear of second-placed Clachan Crew. Two teams were in third place, with the Largiesiders and the Belvoir Players both on 82 points. The winners, Sheila-anne and Peter McCallum, from Campbeltown but with a caravan in Peninver, and Peter’s cousin and her husband, Christine and Bryan Linklater, from Orkney, will have their team name engraved on the shield. Hall chairman George Thomson thanked Gordon for keeping the evening flowing, Rebecca Harvey and Hannah O’Hanlon for compiling the quiz and marking the answer sheets, everyone who took part and those who contributed to the supper and raffle. A total of £198 was raised for hall funds.
