Caledonian Marts cattle sale

Caledonian Marts Ltd sold 238 cattle comprising 66 prime bullocks, heifers and young bulls, 92 OTM cattle and 80 young calves at its sale on Thursday July 11.

Prime bullocks topped at 235p for a Limousin from T H Gray, Balquharrage, Lennoxtown, to D Campbell and Son, Butcher, Callander and to £1,467 for a Limousin from W Dandie and Sons, Learielaw, Broxburn, to T Johnston, Butcher, Falkirk.

Prime heifers reached 240p for a Limousin from W Dandie and Sons, Learielaw, to Robert Alexander, Butcher, Port Glasgow, and to £1,445 for a Limousin from A S Hay, Mains of Cultmalundie, Tibbermore to H A Black and Son, Butcher, Stirling.

Other leading prices: Bullocks per kg: 230p and 225p Learielaw, 222p Brockwoodlees and Mains of Cultmalundie, 220p Bruckley, 215p Balquharrage. Heifers per kg: 232p Learielaw, 228p (x2) Easter Ochtermuthill, 225p Meadowend, 222p Brockwoodlees (x2) and Mains of Cultmalundie. Bullocks per head: £1451 Mains of Cultmalundie, £1393 Learielaw, £1385 Brockwoodlees, £1348 Herdmanston. Heifers per head: £1438 (x2) Brockwoodlees, £1428 Mains of Cultmalundie, £1421 Brockwoodlees, £1382 Meadowend.

Also forward were 92 OTM cattle. All classes remained a firm trade throughout. Top price per kg went to W Dandie and Sons, Learielaw, Broxburn, for a British Blue reaching 163p.

Top price per head went to J Christie, Nether Carse, Gargunnock for a Charolais fetching £1360.

OTM males sold to 180p for a Limousin from J Leiper, Stockbridge, Dunblane and to £1230 for the same beast.

Dairy cows sold to 148p from J Craig, Carneil, Carnock and to £850 (x2) from T Greer and Sons, Wharlawhill, Fossoway and H Harper, Kaimhill, Bridge of Weir.

Other leading prices: Beef OTMs per head: £1250 Nether Carse, £1210 Meadowend, £1180 Learielaw, £1100 Ramoan. Beef OTMs per kg: 158p Meikle Camoquhill, 150p Nether Carse, 147p North Bankhead, 144p Meadowend. Dairy cows per head: £800 Boclair and Castlehill, £780 North Bankhead, £770 Summerhouse, £760 High Auchensale. Dairy cows per kg: 122p Castlehill, 121p Kaimhill and Summerhouse, 117p Kaimhill, 111p North Bankhead.

A larger show of 80 young calves was forward at the fortnightly sale. Beef types remained a sound trade, however dairy calves lacking flesh and length were harder to cash.

Topping the sale was a cracking Simmental Heifer calf from W Kerr and Sons, Wester Braco, Plains, fetching £320.

Dairy calves sold to £145 for a Norwegian Red from G Reade, Sgriob-Ruadh, Tobermory, Isle of Mull.

Beef heifer calves: British Blue £290 Boclair, Limousin £220 Boclair, Simmental £220 and £200 (x3) Gartclush, Aberdeen Angus £150 South Glassingall, Dairy bull calves: HF £100 Drumglass; £80 Woodend, Norwegian Red £90 Sgriob-Ruadh.

The next sale of young calves and stirks will be held on Thursday July 25.
