Glencraigs Farm open day creates a real buzz
It is not only bees that are attracted to Glencraigs Farm’s acres of flowers, as more than 200 people attended the farm’s open day.
The main attraction at last Sunday’s event was a huge field covered almost entirely in purple phacelia but there was also a patch of sunflowers - a feature at the farm last year too - and several patches of five and seven flower mixes.
While some simply enjoyed wandering among the purple plants which caught the eyes of motorists on the A83 just north of Campbeltown for weeks, others took advantage of the other activities on offer.
There were nature walks of three varying lengths, hot drinks and snacks for sale, and information boards about the plants and wildlife to enjoy, as well as workshops on seeding and flower arranging.
Some of the younger visitors also enjoyed tractor rides and a look at some of the farm animals. Farmer David Young explained that the phacelia, although eye-catching for its beautiful purple flowers, was actually planted as a soil improving weed suppressor. It has since been cut down to make way for the field’s next crop.
The sunflowers remain at the farm and are available to purchase on a pick-your-own basis.
In last week’s letters pages, Mr Young said: ‘I’m pleased to report the day raised £314 for the Waverley Boiler Appeal and thanks to Moira Gemmill’s selfless decision the sum of £176 from the teas will go to Woodlands Centre, Campbeltown.’
He added: ‘We are very grateful for the community’s support on the day and we hope to make it an annual event.’
