Knitters blanket Sarah in thanks

-

After 60 hours of knitting, sewing and crocheting Friendly Yarns knitting group finally completed a special patchwork quilt.

The blanket was a gift for Sarah Thompson, who helped the knitters found their group, for which the ladies wanted to repay her.

A total of 162 squares were knitted and much time was then spent sewing and finishing the quilt.

The group even taught Sarah to knit and she has now started on a quilt of her own.

Lesley Mitchell, a member of the group, said: ‘It was really tricky to keep the surprise from Sarah and we kept having to hide what we were doing. I’m so pleased she liked it.’

Rose Bennett, the group’s treasurer, said: ‘When we were forced to move from the Third Sector Interface (TSI) office we really were struggling with what we would do.

‘For many of us this is a real social occasion and we didn’t want the group to end. Sarah has been great, she’s been a wee ray of sunshine; her enthusiasm is so infectious.’

Sarah added: ‘The library staff have been great to us – Florence and Christine have given us a home and I don’t know what we would have done without them.’

Friendly Yarns was established with support from Argyll TSI, but when Sarah’s role was made redundant,

the TSI support ended. Sarah kept the group, a very important part of the members’ lives, running.

It is described not just as a knitting group, but as a place

to meet friends and put the world to rights. Small groups like Friendly Yarns help to address social isolation and loneliness while passing on skills from one generation

to the next and from friend to friend. The group meets every Monday at 2pm in Campbeltown Library and all knitters, or chatters, are welcome.
