On the crest of a wave at Corryvreckan whirlpool

-

The Community Bureau, the charity which runs Campbeltown’s Community Shop, organised a recent day-trip to the Corryvreckan whirlpool, off Jura.

Those present stopped for lunch at the Cairnbaan Hotel and then headed out from Crinan onboard Venture West with skipper Sandy, and Mia.

Ian McVicar, who helped to organise the trip, said: ‘For many people stress, social isolation and health concerns are everyday issues; it’s nice to have something to look forward to with people whose company you enjoy.’

For one person, the day was about getting away from it all for a few hours. They said: ‘Good weather, good company, life affirming and so enjoyable. I have an operation coming up and when I’m in hospital I’ll use this day to meditate and let the stress fade away.’

For Teresa Eames, who had been nervous about going, the day was ‘so relaxing’. She added: ‘We just laid back and chilled on our adventure.’

Glenn Heritage, the Community Bureau’s chief executive officer, said: ‘I loved the day. Our charity is there to help people get the most out of life. We aren’t restricted to any one age-group or theme; we work across the community and respond to need.

‘There were people on that boat who do so much for others and it’s nice to be able to give them something back in return.’

Sarah Thompson added: ‘I have no idea when I’ll get the chance to do something like this again. I’d like to thank Glenn and Ian for organising it and hope we can all meet up again.’

Ian added: ‘It’s nice when a day like this is possible. Groups like the Men’s Shed, Monday Social Club, Seniors Forum and Friendly Yarns do so much good in our community. They were all represented on the trip and it’s they who deserve such credit and support. If other community groups need support, the Community Shop is a good place to seek it.’
