ONE-HUNDRED YEARS AGO
Saturday November 8, 1919 Motor ambulance
The communities of Tarbert, Ardrishaig, Lochgilphead, Clachan, Skipness, Kilberry and the intervening districts will be gratified to learn that, chiefly through the influence and energy of Mr Mackie of Glenreasdale, a fine 18 h.p. motor ambulance wagon has been presented by St. Andrews Ambulance Association, Glasgow.
Some time ago the idea of establishing an ambulance centre for the district was taken up by a number of leading ladies and gentlemen. Application was made for sanction to form a local centre parent, and this sanction had been granted by the association.
A strong local committee was formed, with Lady Ileene Campbell of Stonefield as president and Mr Macfarlane, Union Bank, Tarbert, secretary and treasurer.
It has been arranged that a representative from Glasgow will present the wagon at Tarbert on the morning of Friday November 14.
The wagon will be garaged in Tarbert Hotel garage, ready for use at a moment’s notice on application to the secretary.
Comrades of the Great War
A well-attended meeting of the Campbeltown Branch was held in the Drill Hall, Argyll Street, on Saturday night, when the following motion, which refers to a grievance on which opinion had been hardening for some time, was unanimously passed, viz.: ‘That this branch of the Comrades of the Great War resolves to take the strongest possible measures towards securing that public offices created by the War, or during the War, and at present held by persons in addition to their ordinary employment, which of itself is sufficient to ensure them a good livelihood, should be vacated as soon as possible, in order that men disabled in the service of their country, and at present without employment, may have the opportunity of offering themselves for such posts.’
A special committee, which includes two members, who were formerly commissioned officers, was appointed to take action in terms of the resolution.
A communication was submitted from headquarters asking the branch to nominate a chairman, who should not have had connection with any of the services, and a committee of four members for the purpose of securing for the locality grants from the United Services Fund.
Mr Donald Fisher was nominated for the chairmanship, and the four members selected were:- Messrs Leslie Horne, Donald McKinven, D McMillan and Donald McNair.
A meeting of the Branch takes place in the Argyll Hall tonight (Friday) at 8 o’clock.
