A weekend of cinema at ‘mini’ comedy festival
Campbeltown Picture House has announced a special weekend of Scottish Comedy Film Festival (SCOFF) and Campbeltown Film Institute (CFI) events taking place this month.
The first SCOFF took place last spring, followed by the SCOFF Slapstick Weekend as part of the British Film Institute (BFI) Comedy Genius season a year ago.
The CFI launched in May this year and offers free film screenings, activities and events for young people in Kintyre aged between 10 and 24; it is funded by the national CashBack for Creativity programme.
Organisers are planning SCOFF 2 for 2020, but in the meantime have programmed a weekend of funny films and events.
As part of the nationwide BFI Musicals season, the mini SCOFF includes cult comedy musical, Little Shop of Horrors, a 40th anniversary screening of Monty Python’s Life of Brian, a big silly film quiz with special prizes, retro gaming on the big screen and a special programme of short films.
For the first time, Glasgow Short Film Festival will come to Campbeltown with the most exciting, entertaining new animation from around the world.
Drawn from the last five years of this festival’s ever-popular family programme, the selection takes the audience on an almost impossible journey.
An out-of-shape lion goes on a fitness drive, a grumpy granny loses her bottle of wine and mayhem ensues when a short-sighted hunter mistakes his dog for a rabbit.
SCOFF will also bring back the much-missed old-style double-bill format for a number of feature films over the weekend, screening handpicked shorts before the main movie in partnership with the short film festival.
A glitzy glamorous screening of Baz Luhrmann’s spectacular Moulin Rouge, pictured, will top off Saturday night.
The Picture House is teaming up with Kintyre Gin, Glen Scotia Distillery and
Cadenheads to serve cocktails to the audience (with non-alcoholic alternatives), and the film will be hosted by the amazing performance artist Ru Jazzle, one of Scotland’s top drag queens!
Dressing up, burlesque style and glamour are encouraged, with prizes for the best costumes.
Award-winning
The CFI has organised a special visit from award-winning writer and film-maker Stuart Elliot, who will be visiting Campbeltown Grammar School to talk about his career with students on Friday afternoon.
His work has been featured at many international film festivals. He has directed for BBC Scotland and he is behind some of the hilarious Irn Bru and Aldi ads as well as BBC’s The
Farm, featuring Farmer Jim.
It is followed by a free screening of Aeronauts for CFI members at the cinema and a free workshop looking at the art of short film.
Membership of the CFI is free and open to 10 to 24-year-olds, who can sign up on the day. Workshop places are limited and can be booked in advance by emailing cfi@campbeltownpicturehouse.co.uk
Finally, there will be a free Into Film Club screening of The Grinch at 10am on Sunday. Tickets for the first ever Into Film family screening have already been snapped up, but any returns will be made available from 9.30am on the day.
