Whitehouse team wins Tayinloan quiz trophy

-

From science and spelling to television and trivia, with geography and general knowledge thrown in, there was a lot to test the grey matter at Tayinloan Village Hall’s annual quiz.

Eight teams of Largieside residents competed for the coveted Tayinloan Hall Trophy but it was a team from Whitehouse which took the silverware home.

There were 10 rounds but not every round was worth 10 points, with a total of 125 up for grabs.

Former hall committee member Gordon Caskie, with his usual humorous delivery, returned as quizmaster.

There were standard general knowledge and multiple choice rounds, with a number round, a colour round, a Family Fortunes-style round and a picture round mixing things up.

Among the questions asked were: ‘What does a lepidopterist study or collect?’; ‘In which street did the Great Fire of London start?’ and ‘What colour does litmus paper turn when dipped in an acidic solution?’

The biggest reaction came when visitors were asked how

many letters there are in the word ‘supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’, which quite a few teams answered correctly at 34.

During the picture round, they were asked to identify famous faces, city skylines and logos, with the skylines proving most challenging.

It was all to play for after the first six rounds, at which time a buffet supper was served, with only eight points separating the top five teams.

After food to revitalise the contestants, it was back into the quiz. It was a closer contest than some years, with only 24 points separating the first and last placed teams, with winners Red Devils – Margaret Pratt, Chris Meldrum, Michael O'Donnell and Dorothy O'Donnell – finishing with 88 points.

They held on to the first place position they established after round three, and second placed Llamas, from Clachan, also maintained their early success, while third placed finishers, Simple Minds, from Tayinloan, climbed the ranks towards the end of the quiz.

The winning members of Red Devils revealed it is not the first time they have won the trophy, but the first time with a new name. They spotted their former team name, Casablanca, on the shield at least three times.

Before the winners were announced, a raffle was drawn and, afterwards, hall treasurer Kate McKinlay revealed almost £200 had been raised for the hall funds.

She thanked Rebecca Harvey and Hannah O’Hanlon for compiling the quiz, Gordon for being such an able quizmaster and everyone who attended and made the night such a success.
