The NFUS roadshow ploughs into Tarbert
National Farmers’ Union Scotland (NFUS) ploughed into Tarbert last Friday as part of a 15-date policy roadshow.
A good turnout of farming and crofting members from across the region attended the event, and one in Oban later the same day, which saw NFUS vice-president Martin Kennedy, director of policy Jonnie Hall and regional board chairman John Dickson in attendance.
In a week that saw him meet farming and crofting members on Skye, Benbecula, Lewis and Harris, Mr Kennedy said: ‘At a time of great change, it has never been more important for the union to meet with members to discuss the huge range of issues that they face.
Opportunity
‘By the time the roadshows finish next week, we will have had 15 meetings around the country giving every member the opportunity to discuss the urgent policy matters that will inevitably impact on them in the months and years ahead.
‘With great turnouts so far, issues have ranged from convergence, Brexit and future support to climate change, species management and supply chains and it is clear every sector faces a period of significant change.’
Mr Hall added: ‘Politics and policy are rapidly shaping our industry’s future at a time when farming and crofting
face unprecedented physical and financial challenges.
‘From convergence, Brexit and future support to climate change and supply chains, every sector of Scottish agriculture faces a period of significant change. At the
same time, Scottish agriculture must also make the most of any new opportunities.
Prosperous future
‘Our priority is to secure a prosperous future for Scottish agriculture and all that it underpins.
‘These 15 roadshows present an opportunity for members to have their say on urgent policy matters that will inevitably impact on them in the months and years to come.’
Starting on Thursday, November 7 in Castle Douglas,
the tour took in Dingwall, Thurso, Kirkwall, Irvine, Inverurie, Perth, Broadford, Benbecula, Stornoway, Lerwick, Tarbert, Oban and Carfra emill before finishing at Stepps near Glasgow yesterday.
