Santa’s visit sparks festive fun
Santa joined in the festivities when Campbeltown’s Christmas lights were switched on last Friday night. Among those who met the big man himself during his visit to Campbeltown Town Hall were Catriona McLean and her daughter Eve, and her niece Hollie, photographed here. Two special little girls were joined by some ‘MARVELOUS’ superheroes to turn on Campbeltown’s Christmas lights this year.
Grace McCoubrey, aged five, and two-year-old Ava MacBrayne, the winners of the golden tickets who were selected to turn on the lights, were joined by Thor, SpiderMan, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Panther and ‘baddie’ Thanos, all from the fictional Marvel Universe, as they pushed the plunger and illuminated Campbeltown in festive cheer last Friday night.
There were some new additions to the lights this year – a sign above Longrow which reads: ‘Christmas in Campbeltown’, as well as set of new lights for the town’s Christmas tree.
The tree lights, purchased by the Campbeltown Christmas Lights Group, are mostly clear, with a ring of red around the bottom in honour of those who have perished in wars, a request made by Campbeltown Benevolent Fund which made a donation to the group.
Main Street was once again the centre of the evening’s entertainment, a return to tradition after last year’s Burnside Square event.
The parade also returned this year, with many impressively decorated floats and dressed-up participants, led by the pipe band, kick-starting the festivities.
Willie Durnan and Bobby Cairns once again worked their magic to transform Campbeltown Town Hall and recreate Santa’s living room, complete with warming replica fireplace, so that, afterwards, Santa and two of his elves could meet the many youngsters who attended the switch-on.
