Kenny recounts tales of his treks

-

Retired Tarbert fisherman Kenny MacNab enthralled members of Clachan SWI with a presentation on three walks he has completed.

The group’s January meeting took place in the school as the hall is now unsafe due to water leaking in.

The first of the treks Kenny described was when he walked with a group on different sections of the Great Wall of China over 10 days. Each day they were taken to a different area where the wall was often quite ruinous and the uneven steps rose and fell very steeply.

After completing that walk, Kenny decided to go on part of the Annapurna circuit in Nepal. The country was suffering economically from lack of tourism after a devastating earthquake that had wiped out entire villages with landslides. Kenny shared some amazing photographs with the group, showing the Himalayas in the early morning before the clouds covered them. At the end of the trip he elected to go on a flight that went around Mount

Everest and other peaks. Kenny raised thousands of pounds in sponsorship for the Fishermen’s Mission in memory of his late brother.

More recently he walked the Freedom Trail from France to Spain over the Pyrenees. This route was taken by many Jews escaping the Nazis during the war. He again raised sponsor money, this time for Parkinson’s Disease research.

This year he intends to walk the Camino route from France to Santiago de Compostela which is about 600 miles.

Kenny was thanked for his interesting and inspirational talk. He then judged the competitions, after which tea was served and the raffle drawn.

Results: A piece of China: 1 Margaret Mundell, 2 Zoe Weir, 3 Liz Ball. Something used to build a wall: 1 Jill Francis, 2 Pauline Simson, 3 Zoe Weir.
