Community Bureau helps older people get online

-

The Community Bureau, the charity which runs the community shop at 21 Longrow South, has been assisting people with their home-based IT issues.

‘We are supposed to live in this interconnected world, and yet many people find themselves unable to access things that other people take for granted,’ said Glenn Appleton, the charity’s chief executive officer. ‘We’ve been inundated with people looking for assistance with everyday IT-related tasks, like shopping online or how to set up tablets, broadband or phones.’

Ian McVicar, who has been assisting people with homebased IT issues, suggests it’s a real concern. He said: ‘For many, Facebook, WhatsApp or mobile devices are so valuable for keeping us connected and in touch with loved ones.

Many of us use social media to maintain friendships and feel part of each others’ lives, but we forget that others have never even sent an email. We’ve simply been helping those who need it.’

Eileen Baillie, one of those who has used the service, was adamant that her life was richer being IT-savvy. She said: ‘I love to read and I love my kindle; it allows me to download any book I want in a fraction of a second and through Facebook I can see what my family overseas are up to. If I get stuck I know who to call.’

Teresa Eames, who wants people to realise age should be no barrier, added: ‘My husband Ken and I just celebrated our 58th wedding anniversary and will be heading back to Ireland for a holiday. I can book our flights, our accommodation and even see the view from the hotel windows we will be staying in, all on my computer.

‘When I have a problem it’s nice I can call on Ian and he will help me if I make him a cuppa.’

If anyone feels they need a little computer guidance, or fancy volunteering at the community bureau, just pop into 21 Longrow South and those inside will be only too pleased to help.
