A bumper year for drama in Kintyre

-

Organisers are delighted to welcome teams old and new to this year’s bumper KintyreArgyll District Drama Festival later this month.

The festival, which is expected to be the biggest the area has seen in years, is a part of the Scottish Community Drama Association and will take place in the Victoria Hall from Thursday February 20 to Saturday February 22.

Opening the festival is last year’s winning youth club, Dalintober Primary School, which took the festival by storm and represented Argyll at the Youth Divisional Final in 2019. This year, its play is An Inspector Calls, by Andrew Oxspring, which tells of the trials and tribulations when inspectors visit the school.

Next, a very warm welcome will be given to a new generation of Carradale Juniors, who return after several years with their play Mountain High, by Dave Buchanan, about a youth club trip to Arran.

Thursday’s third play is from Benderloch and North Connel, last year’s winners, with Penguin Diplomacy, by John Finnemore. It will show how a series of misunderstandings almost leads to an international incident.

Friday night opens with a brand new club from Lochgilphead, S’DRAMAsh! This exciting youth team is presenting Bye Baby Bunting, by Mark Green. Set in 1839, when child labour was commonplace, young workers comfort each other after an underground mine-shaft collapses.

Festival favourites Peninver Players present the second play, Costa Del Packet, by Anthony Booth, about a very eventful holiday in the sun.

The third play is another entry from Benderloch and North Connel, The Rebel Alliance, by John Finnemore, which takes place at a wedding.

On Saturday evening another brand new youth team takes to the stage. The No Refund Theatre Company from Dunoon presents Chatroom, by Enda Walsh, a thought-provoking play about online communities.

The final play of the festival is presented by Campbeltown team Accent Players. Young Souls, by Sally Brockway, is a comedy set in a nursing home, with bittersweet undertones.

Paul Dougall is the adjudicator with the almost impossible task of choosing the winners. Tickets are sure to be in high demand, and can be booked in advance tomorrow morning (Saturday February 8) in the Argyll Arms Hotel foyer from 11am till noon, and thereafter at the Yorkshire Building Society, Longrow South.
