Shuttle service at Scottish Schools badminton qualifiers

-

Athletes from Campbeltown Grammar School joined more than 70 pupils from Oban High, Tobermory High, Dunoon Grammar and Rothesay Academy who converged at Oban’s Atlantis Leisure for the annual regional Scottish Schools badminton qualifiers.

The visitors had difficult journeys through some snowy conditions on the morning of the recent competition but everyone made it to compete in what turned out to be a fantastic day of badminton.

Active schools coordinators Gillian Walker and Alan Wright as well as Oban High School PE teacher Denise Gemmell organised the event which has been running since 2002.

Under 14, 16 and 19 competitions were played in singles, doubles and mixed doubles for both boys and girls with a good spread of prize-winners throughout the region, including Campbeltown.

Mrs Gemmell said: ‘There were many nail-biting games played not just in the finals but throughout the day.

‘The standard was exceptionally high and we wish all the pupils that go on to represent Argyll and Bute in the Scottish Schools competition in March the best of luck.

‘Most importantly though was the spirit in which games were played – it was competitive but very sporting and fair.’
