Machrihanish Golf Club raised more than £12,000 last Saturday at its first dinner auction.

There were 16 items up for grabs at the black tie event in the Argyll Arms Hotel, Campbeltown, including four-ball golf courtesy of Royal Troon, Royal Dornoch, Castle Stuart, The Renaissance Club, Machrie, Gullane, Royal St George’s, Royal Birkdale, Hillhouse Group, and Western Gailes.

There was also accommodation on offer, including a weekend stay in a lodge with a hot tub at Machrihanish Holiday Park, and a twonight stay at Skibo Castle, including all food and drink and unlimited golf.

Other lots which were available were two return tickets for any flight on

the Loganair network, and VIP hospitality tickets for a Glasgow Warriors v Cheetahs rugby union match courtesy of McCrea Financial Services.

A club spokesperson said: ‘We would like to say a big thank you to all the contributors for the items that were auctioned and to all the members who attended the dinner.

‘All items sold very well on the night and the club made a staggering £12,750 that will go towards the new clubhouse.’

A new clubhouse is currently being built after the previous building was destroyed by fire in December 2018.

Building firm McKinven and Colville was announced as the main contractor for the project in September last year and work began on the new clubhouse, designed by Glasgow-based G1 Architects, soon afterwards.

Work was delayed slightly by the recent storms, but the structure is beginning to take shape, with the roof trusses on, the internal staircases in and the external timber frame has started to go up.

It is hoped that better weather and longer hours of daylight will enable the builders to make up the lost time and finish the construction on schedule later this year.

Once complete, it will be the first time in the club’s history that men, women and juniors will all be housed under one roof.

Speaking to the Courier last year, club captain Willie Ross said: ‘Finally Machrihanish will have a five-star clubhouse to go with a five-star course.’
